At Base Esperanza - Antártida Argentina RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

COVID-19: the only school that is open in Argentina

The Esperanza Antarctic Base is located 6700 kilometers away from the city of Buenos Aires. It is a military scientific station in the Argentine sector of Antarctica. It is located in the Trinidad Peninsula on the Antarctic Strait (or San Martin Land).

On RAE-Argentina al Mundo we talked to Victor Navarro Salazar, the school's teacher, and to Lieutenant Colonel Walter Nahuel Tripay, the base commander.

The Base has one of the few schools in the World where lessons weren't disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 14 children of ages 5 to 12- are going back to the classroom this Monday following the winter break. They are pupils of Escuela N 38 Presidente Raúl Alfonsín, where Salazar teaches, together with María Ibarra and two assistants.

This is one of the two bases in Antarctica where staff can be joined by their families. Currently at Esperanza there are 63 people from 10 families working in military and scientific roles.

In Esperanza, as you will know, there is a radio station: LRA 36 Arcángel San Gabriel, the only Argentine SW radio station on that continent, which is part of Argentina's National Radio Network.
