COVID -19 RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Argentina's new minister of Health is sworn in

Carla Vizzotti took office after president Alberto Fernández demanded her predecessor Ginés González García to resign, following a controversy surrounding the vaccination of officials and journalists that didn't register in waiting lists.

The accusation was published by newspaper Clarín, which ran a story about a so-called "vaccination center for VIP's", where journalist Horacio Verbitski got a jab and sparked a scandal when he told on radio that he was able to get a shot, by directly phoning the now former minister, that he called "his good old friend".

The controversy led president Fernandez to demand explanations from his cabinet before he asked for the resignation of Gonzalez Garcia, whose tenure had achievements recognized even by the opposition.

This scandal broke out just days before the President went on an official tour to Mexico, to join the celebrations on the 200th anniversary of the Mexican Independence. During his trip he paid a visit to the plant of Oxford-Astrazeneca laboratory, where vaccines are manufactured jointly with a plant in Argentina.

The new minister, a physician specializing in infectious diseases, was until Saturday in charge of giving updates on the pandemic in the country.
