On the occasion of Tango Day, we review the most relevant songs written by one of the top Tango lyricists of all time: Enrique Santos Discepolo (1901-1951), creator of anthems such as "Uno", "Malevaje", "Cambalache", and many others.
We also explain some of the key concepts in Tango mythology that Discepolo expressed so clearly in his tunes: the idealization of the past, the value of friendship, the grim outlook of the world and its future, the misfortunes of love, the wisdom of cafés characters, etcetera.
We play renditions of Discepolo's songs by the likes of Carlos Gardel, Julio Sosa, Adriana Varela, Roberto Goyeneche, among other singers.

Photo: Luca Prodan, the late lead singer of Argentine rock band Sumo. He was born in Italy and was raised in a Soottish boarding school. He began his music career in London, influenced by ska, reggae and punk. In the early 1980s he accepted a former schoolmate's invitation to move to Argentina and start a new life, away from drugs. Already in South America he picked up music again and formed a band whose first songs were written in a language Luca was more familiar with: English. Later on, he'd start singing in Spanish too, albeit with a strong Italian accent, which would become one of distinctive features of Sumo's sound.

He lives In the province of Mendoza, where he works with US students groups visiting the country and advises foreigners interested in investing in the local wine industry, Argentina's most important.
In 2019 he sent a letter to a newspaper, explaining why he still choses Argentina as his home after almost two decades. David's letter went viral, especially in the context of many Argentines wanting to move abroad because of the economy.

He also heads the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the University of La Plata's Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, an entity that integrates the Global Virus Network.

This talk was recorded back in 2012, in the context of the 30th anniversary of the conflict between Argentina and the UK.

-Interview with British writer Daniel Tunnard about his latest book, a novel about Scrabble players and their conflict with a game-fixing mafia organization, in an alternative world in which Scrabble generates as much money as football or boxing. Daniel is a Scrabble champion himself and has represented Argentina in international competitions despite Spanish not being his first language.
-Some commentary and music about the October 12 Holiday, that here in Argentina is not marked anymore as a celebration or festivity but rather a day for reflection on the catastrophe 1492 meant for the aboriginal civilizations of the Americas.
