Schools remain closed in Patagonia due to the COVID-19 pandemic RAE ARGENTINA TO THW WORLD

School on the Radio

The pandemic hit education on all levels. In large urban centers, teachers and students connect via the internet, using all kinds of platforms and devices.

But in regions where access to the Internet is null or bad, there are many inconveniences for remote teaching. For this reason, teachers at the semi-rural school 132 Cerro El Radal, in the province of Chubut, every Friday host a radio program to provide basic content through the airwaves and to maintain contact with students and their families.

Three of the teachers are Nieve Sosa, Gabriela Rama and Ana Mauro. The school in Cerro Radal, is located 8 kilometers from Lago Puelo, in Patagonia, 1700 kilometers from the city of Buenos Aires.

Rae-Argentina al Mundo talked to Nieve Sosa, a 5th grade teacher. She said they have 140 students, from different places, who every Friday participate as in the program produced and hosted by the teachers.

She also referred to how, in a province where teachers are not fully paid because of the economic crisis the local government fails to tackle, every Friday children become correspondents for music, history, arts, science and environment. Radio and school come together to face the pandemic and thus support those who live in far-off places of Argentina.
