Pampa El Leoncito

El Leoncito National Park is located in the southwest of the province of San Juan, about 1300 kilometers from the city of Buenos Aires. It was created in 2001 and it has a surface of 90 thousand hectares, in which the mountain ranges, the tip, and the high Andes are intermingled.

In the heart of the Sierra del Tontal and facing the Calingasta Valley, El Leoncito is one of the few places in the world that have the highest quality of air and sky purity, so it is a privileged space where scientists from all over the world come to make astronomical observations.

There is a world-class astronomy centers here and one of them is El Leoncito Observatory,  located at 2552 meters above sea level, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.

It was established in a ranch donated by Hector Zamarbide who first allowed access to scientists from the American University of Yale in the early 1960s that sought determine the absolute motions of southern stars.
