#NiUnaMenos - Five Years On

Five years ago, the women of Argentina took to the streets all over the country to protest all forms of gender violence, which had been and are terribly escalating with more aggressions and more femicides. The slogan #NiUnaMenos -Not One Less-, is a cry that is unfortunately still alive.

But it has been putting situations of oppression and life risks for women of all ages, and all social classes, on the political agenda.

RAE - Argentina To The World's Whatsapp Group, talked about this movement with Ingrid Beck, journalist, writer and feminist activist, and one of the referents of the #NiUnaMenos movement.

On the anniversary of the first rally, Beck took part in the briefing of the daily report on the COVID-19 pandemic issued by the Ministry of Health together with Alejandro Costa (Undersecretary of Health Strategies) and Carla Vizzotti (Secretary of Health Access).

Here's Beck explaining how this movement was born, a movement that spearheaded a worldwide movement against gender violence

///NiUnaMenos meaning "Not A Single Woman Less" emerged in Argentina following the femicides of various teenage girls during the first months of 2015. This exposed a growing social discontent about crimes against women, and also because media re-victimized women when informing about cases.

A fellow journalist, Marcela Ojeda, tweeted back then: "They are killing us, and we're not doing anything about it?", after the body of a teenage girl, killed by her boyfriend, was found.

Several of us journalists decided to think together about what could be done, because we realized we weren't doing enough. And we decided to take to the streets.

We never thought that more than 500 thousand people would gather in the streets to say "Enough with Femicide".
