Argentine Government revokes concession to TBA, the company managing the railway system

Planning Minister Julio De Vido announced  that the concession granted to Trenes de Buenos Aires (TBA) company, managing two railway lines, has been revoked..

TBA holds since 1995 the concessions to run the passenger services in the Sarmiento and Mitre lines. A decree signed by President Cristina Fernández stated that TBA has failed to comply with a number of obligations assumed in the concession regarding the quality and safety of the services.

Besides, De Vido announced that the private companies in charge of the concessions of the Roca, San Martín and Belgrano railway lines, Ferrovías and Metrovías, respectively, have been called on to make up a single Operative unity, to manage the services.

Argentina’s extensive railway system, nationalized by former President Juan D. Perón in 1948, was privatized in the nineties. Following the privatization, the system was sharply reduced, and continued in operation thanks to the Government subsidies.
